New-State Well Codes

The State Well Codes database stores state standards for the construction of private water wells.

Included in the database is state-specific information on various codes related to well construction and siting. To find information on your state or other states, use the searchable database below.

Please note that this database is intended as a guide and occasionally standards change. WSC updates the database periodically, but we encourage you to obtain a full list of state well codes from your state environmental agency or contact the wellcare® Hotline for assistance.

If you have questions about the database, corrections or updates, please contact Charlene Bean.

Please click on the State Name in the list below for well code information. If you would like to alphabetize the table, click on the column name in blue.

For reverse rotary construction (only if public or groundwater source requirements not met) flowing surface supplies may be used with disinfection to min concentration of 25 mg/L or the well is disinfected in accordance with the provisions of Rule 6.9.1 (also see Rule 15.7). All wells constructed using water from non-public water supply source shall be flushed, cleaned and disinfected upon completion with min chlorine concentration of 500 mg/L with minimum of 12 hour contact time. Use of water from lakes, ponds or known contaminated groundwater sources is prohibited.

Colorado Casing Perforation

Must not result in inclusions or debris. Oxygen-acetylene torch-cut perforations are prohibited on casings <5 in ID.

Colorado Casing Centralizers

Must be installed on grouted surface casing within 5 ft. of bottom, and max. 50 ft. grouted intervals of production casing, or top and bottom if casing <50 ft.

California Seals Seals-Transitional Seals

Up to 5 ft in length, bentonite and/or sand. Water added to bentonite at ration 1 gal water to 2 lbs bentonite. Installed using tremie pipe or equivalent. Top of seal shall be sounded to ensure no bridging has occurred.

California Seals Seals-Placement

All cutting removed prior to placement. If needed, centralizers shall be metal (same as casing), plastic, or non-degradable material.

California Seals Seals-Annual Seal

Shall be effectively sealed to min 20 ft depth below land surface within 14 days of casing installation. Where water is produced at a depth <20 ft, annual seal shall be no less than 10 ft in length upon agency approval. If well approved by agency to be closer than standard code to source of pollution, annual seal shall extend from ground surface to first impervious stratum if possible, or to min depth of 50 ft. Top of seal shall be no more than 4 ft below ground surface. See page 16-17 of Bulletin 74-90 for special sealing conditions for wells drilled in soft or unconsolidated/caving material, and wells penetrating zones of poor-water quality, pollutants or contaminants.

California Casing Thermoset Plastic

Shall meet NSF 14 including ASTM F480 requirements, as well as Filament Wound Resin Pipe-ASTM D2996, Cetrifugally Cast Resin Pipe-ASTM D2997, Reinforced Plastic Mortar Pressure Pipe-ASTM D3517, Glass Fiber Reinforced Resin Pressure Pipe-AWWA C950.

California Casing Solvent Cements and Joints

Shall meet ASTM D2564, ASTM D2855

Arkansas Testing Testing - Excessive Sediment

Excessive sediment complaints or wells that produce more than 5 mg/L of sediment, sampling process using EPA Test Method 160.5 (Imhoff Cone) and USGS approved 500 ml sample bottles shall be followed, steps described in 9.2.1.2. The bottles are to be sealed and labeled with date and initials of the person collecting the sample, and a “Chain of Custody” form shall be completed by the employee who completed the sampling. Samples shall be placed on ice and kept at cool temps until delivered to qualified water quality testing laboratory with 72 hrs of collection.

Arkansas Location Pressure Tanks

Shall be located above ground or in a pit or basement that is adequately drained. A pressure tank may be buried if designed for installation below ground. Tanks designed for use inside the bore of a water well must be approved by the Commission.

Arkansas Grout Bentonite-Slurries

Not allowed for well abandonment in the unsaturated zone (above water level).

Arkansas Grout Bentonite-Chips

May only be used to plug a well if the well’s diameter is four (4) inches or more, depth is less than 600 ft, and the well contains less than 500 ft of standing water.

Arkansas Construction Driven, Dug or Bored Well-Upper Terminal

Watertight lining shall extend at least 8 in. above finished ground surface. A cover slab at least 2 1/2 in. thick, adequately reinforced with a diameter sufficient to overlap the lining by 2 in. shall be provided. The top of the slab shall be sloped to drain to all sides and a watertight joint made where the slab rests on the well lining using cement mortar or a mastic compound. A manhole, if installed, shall consist of a metal curb cast in the slab and extending 4 in. above the slab. The manhole shall have a watertight covering having sides to overhang the curb at least 2 in. Adequate sized pipe (plastic pipe may be used) shall be cast in place in the slab, extending at least 8 in. above the slab, to accommodate the type of pump or pump piping proposed for the well. If the well contractor does not install the pump, a cap (seal) will be placed on top of the pipe. The owner or licensed driller may cut off the cap and must leave a minimum of 2 in. above the slab.

Arkansas Construction Driven, Dug or Bored Well-Annular Opening

Shall be sealed with grout. If first 10 ft. of casing is jointed, grout will continue from 10 ft seal to ground level.

Arkansas Construction Dug or Bored Well

Shall have a continuous watertight lining of steel casing or concrete pipe extending from above ground surface to a depth of at least ten (10) feet below the ground surface. If more than one water-bearing formation, the lower formation should be used. Lining in the producing zone shall readily admit water and shall be structurally sound to withstand external pressures.

Arkansas Construction Driven Well

Outer casing grouted from ground surface to a minimum 10 ft. depth. Plastic or steel casing that will accommodate the outside diameter of the pipe being driven shall be placed in a hole that has a minimum diameter of 4 in. larger than the surface casing and grout at minimum 2 in. thick.

Arkansas Grout Unconsolidated Formations

A minimum of the upper ten (10) feet shall be filled with grout after the casing is in place.

Arkansas Construction Gravel Wall

Annular opening shall be filled with concrete, cement, or Bentonite grout in the upper twenty (20) feet.

Arkansas Casing PVC Pipe

Must be made to ASTM F480, must be manufactured as water well casing and marked permanently as well casing. Must be strong enough to withstand formation and hydrostatic pressures. Cannot be driven.

Arkansas Casing Unconsolidated Formations

Shall have a permanent casing installed, casing or screen shall extend the complete length of the drill hole. A minimum of the upper ten (10) feet shall be filled with grout after the casing is in place.

Arizona Construction Hand-dug Well

Shall have watertight curbing extending at minimum 1 ft. above surface down to static water level, or into confining formation if well is artesian. Curbing shall consist of poured cement grout with a minimum thickness of 6 in., or casing with cement grout within a minimum of 3 in. annular space, concrete block with grout, or rock with cement grout may also be used. Must be sealed at the surface with a watertight, tamper-resistant cover.

Arizona Construction Jetting or Driving
